Almost every AI API you use today runs on AWS, Google Cloud or Azure. Their electricity comes from the grid wherever the data center sits, and when they announce "100% renewable" they almost always mean they have bought origin certificates —paperwork that offsets on an annual balance, not that the socket carries sunlight.
We do it the other way around. And we say so carefully, because it is one of the few claims European rules already watch closely: a "green" you cannot prove is misleading advertising.
Uttera doesn't run on anyone's cloud. The engines that transcribe, synthesise, translate and analyse live in our own facilities in Andalusia, on a self-consumption solar plant with a battery bank. The order is always the same: sun first, then the battery, and the grid only if neither is enough.
This is the flip side of the same coin as data sovereignty: if your audio never leaves our machines, and our machines are powered by the sun, there is no third company in the middle —neither for your data nor for the energy that processes it.
Our status page computes the self-consumption percentage straight from the utility company's meter —the same device the bill comes from, not our inverters— and recalculates it every 20 minutes over a 30-day window. If in that period we exported to the grid at least as much as we imported, the plant produced everything the site spent.
It is not a promise: it is a measured, public number. You can see it right now on the service status.
We have had the electricity bill at zero for three years. Not a good year cherry-picked: it is the sustained net balance, low-sun months included.
Being honest here matters more than looking good:
If in any period the bill stops being zero, we will say so on the sustainability page itself. A measured, published claim —bad months and all— is the only one that survives an audit, and the only one that deserves your trust.
